Back-to-School 2026 for Barefoot Families: First Days, Feeder Schools, and What's New at Mead
St. Vrain Valley's first day of school lands August 18, and this year Barefoot families have an extra wrinkle to sort out: a brand-new school opening right on the Mead High campus.

The calendar has that end-of-summer tilt to it, and if you have kids at Barefoot Lakes or Barefoot Village, the questions are starting: When's the first day? Which school do we actually go to? Is anything different this year? Here's a straight, Barefoot-specific rundown so you can spend August getting ready instead of guessing.
First day of school 2026: the key dates
St. Vrain Valley Schools uses a staggered start, so not every student begins on the same day. For the 2026-27 year, per the district's academic calendar:
Tuesday, August 18 — first day for grades 1-5, plus 6th and 9th graders (the transition grades get their own day to settle in)
Wednesday, August 19 — first day for grades 7-8 and 10-12
Wednesday, May 27, 2027 — last day for students
If you have a 6th or 9th grader, that separate first day is a genuine help. Starting middle school or high school without the older grades in the building takes some of the edge off a big transition.
Which schools serve Barefoot Lakes and Barefoot Village?
This is the question I get most from families relocating here, and the answer is refreshingly simple. Barefoot sits in Firestone within St. Vrain Valley Schools, and the community's neighborhood feeder schools are the Mead schools, all within roughly five miles:
Mead Elementary — preschool through 5th grade
Mead Middle School — grades 6-8
Mead High School — grades 9-12
That's the traditional path a Barefoot student has followed. But 2026 adds something new worth understanding before the first bell.
What's new this year: Big Sky PK-8 opens on the Mead campus
For the 2026-27 school year, St. Vrain is opening Big Sky PK-8, a new school built on a shared campus with Mead High School. It opens as a PK-6 building to start, with modern, flexible learning spaces and shared common areas designed to connect the two school communities.
Here's the part Barefoot families need to pay attention to: the district has indicated that students south of Highway 66 will attend Big Sky PK-8. Whenever a district opens a new school, attendance boundaries get redrawn, and that can change which building your child reports to even if your address hasn't moved.
Because boundary lines are exact and a new school shifts them, I won't guess which side of the line your specific home falls on. The reliable move is to confirm your assigned school directly. St. Vrain publishes a neighborhood school locator where you enter your address and see your assigned schools. Do that before you buy supplies or set a bus routine, especially if you're new to Barefoot or your kids attended a different building last year.
Open enrollment and school choice
Colorado families aren't locked to their neighborhood school. St. Vrain participates in open enrollment, which lets you request a seat at a school outside your attendance area when space allows. There are also charter options that draw from Firestone and the surrounding communities, including Firestone Charter Academy (preschool-8) and Carbon Valley Academy (K-8).
If you're weighing choices, a few honest notes from watching local families do this: open-enrollment seats depend on capacity and aren't guaranteed, transportation is often on you rather than the district, and popular programs fill early. If school choice is part of why you're looking at Barefoot, it's worth researching the specific windows and deadlines rather than assuming a spot will be open in August.
Your August checklist
To keep the back-to-school scramble manageable, here's the short list I'd work through if I had a student starting at Barefoot this fall:
Confirm your assigned school using the district's neighborhood school locator, especially with Big Sky PK-8 now in the mix
Finish registration if you haven't; the 2026-27 registration window opened back in December, so new-to-district families should complete it right away
Check bus eligibility and routes for your address once your school is confirmed
Grab the supply list from your specific school's site, since lists vary by building and grade
Mark the staggered start so a 6th or 9th grader shows up on August 18 and a 7th, 8th, or upper-grade student on August 19
With a new school opening on the Mead campus this year, the single most useful thing a Barefoot family can do is verify their assigned school before the first day. Everything else gets easier once that's settled.
