The stretch between late July and the first day of school is short, so here's a bookmarkable weekend planner that starts close to Barefoot and works outward to the bigger draws nearby.

School starts August 18, which means Barefoot families have a handful of open weekends left to enjoy summer before the routine takes over. The good news is you don't have to go far. Carbon Valley packs a lot into a small radius, and some of the best late-summer options are minutes from Barefoot Lakes and Barefoot Village. Here's a planner that leads with what's closest to home, then points you toward the regional favorites a short drive away.
Closest to home: Carbon Valley Parks & Rec and The Cove
Start in your own backyard. Carbon Valley Parks and Recreation District serves Firestone, Frederick, and Dacono, and its recreation center, pool, and summer programming are the easy default for a low-effort weekend. Late summer is when the outdoor pool and drop-in activities get the most use, so it's worth pulling up the CVPRD events and registration calendar to see what's running before school starts, since program schedules and pool hours shift as the season winds down.
If you live at Barefoot Lakes, you also have The Cove, the community's own amenity area, right where you live. For a lot of families, a Saturday morning at The Cove followed by an afternoon at the rec center is the whole plan, and honestly, that's a pretty good one this time of year.
A short drive: Union Reservoir in Longmont
Union Reservoir is a longtime local favorite for paddling and lakeside time, and it's an easy trip from Barefoot. One important heads-up for 2026: because of low water levels, the main swim beach is closed for the season. So this isn't the year to plan a classic beach-swim day there.
What is available: a designated shallow wading area, open roughly late May through mid-September, plus paddling and the nature area's trails. There are also scheduled open-water swim sessions during the summer for older teens and adults. If you're heading over, go for the paddleboards, the shoreline, and the quiet rather than a swim beach, and check the City of Longmont's Union Reservoir page for current hours and fees before you load the car.
Worth the trip: the Boulder County Fair, August 5-9
For a bigger outing, the Boulder County Fair runs August 5 through 9 at the Boulder County Fairgrounds in Longmont, still an easy drive from Carbon Valley. It's one of the oldest county fairs in the state, and it leans into the classics: 4-H animal projects, a petting zoo and Kids' Corral, the Dairy Bar, live entertainment, and grandstand events like the demolition derby, bull riding, and rodeo.
Two things make it especially family-friendly: gate admission and parking are free, and there's enough variety that a couple of hours works as well as a full evening. If you have younger kids, the animals and petting zoo alone are worth the drive. If you have older ones, the grandstand events are the draw.
The move this time of year: anchor the weekend close to home at the rec center or The Cove, add one bigger outing like the fair or an afternoon at Union Reservoir, and leave room to do nothing at all.
